Upon reading this story my mind immediately flashed back to a story reported by VegasNewsReview.com just a few months ago where a woman lost her life to “unlicensed practitioners” providing cosmetic surgery at discount rates in back-rooms.
Today Juan Alberto Ruan-Rivera, 44, was arrested for sexually assaulting unsuspecting patients while claiming to be a doctor, chiropractor or therapist licensed who was licensed in Mexico. Ok, licensed in Mexico (if true) still means licensed in Mexico. The United States is NOT Mexico. This is Las Vegas located in Nevada, which is one of 50 states in the United States of America. I know, my point is obvious but this whole scenario makes me furious.
Once again susceptible members of our community are duped by the lure of reduced costs for medical services. Sometimes cost is not even a factor, rather some members of our community who have concerns of cultural and language barriers or medical records being maintained and will opt to use “Dr’s from their home country” as a means of feeling more comfortable. The sad part of this perspective is that these con men know that they can prey upon their communities and their fears.
The end result of this “practice” – three people have been sexually assaulted and from previous case one women is dead. (read the RJ story on Juan Alberto Ruan here)
